Pipe Cay to Nassau, Part 11

As the weather and water temperature would be at their best in May and June, it was disappointing to have to leave, but it was the right thing to do. As it turned out, after we got back to Boot Key Harbor, we found a few other mechanical show stoppers and were thankful to be in an area where parts were available. But, I'm getting ahead of the story.

Over the next few days, with cooperative weather, we returned to Shroud Cay, and then back up to Nassau where it was apparent that the generator part was not available. Stateside it would have to be.

After a two day stopover at Nassau's East Bay Marina, for weatherconsiderations, we made the decision to try and make the run back to Cat & Gun Cay across the banks in one day rather than two. It would be a 120 mile day with some night time running. I was especially glad to do this because anchoring out in the middle of the banks means an uncomfortable night in short choppy seas with currents that dominate and leave you rolling in the trough. Even on relatively calm nights it can be difficult to get any sleep.

Leaving Nassau Harbor in the predawn hours, the weather was great. The trip across the banks, although long, was uneventful and we arrived at Gun Cay around 10:30 PM. Next stop, Port Everglades, Florida.
